There is more that can be done with an outdoor pond, if there is space available it can be quite large. It should be away from trees to avoid leaves falling into it, and slightly above ground level to keep out rainwater and the flow of debris that comes with it.
After deciding where your pond will be, you need to decide how big it will be. If there are going to be fish in it, the pond will have to be an adequate depth. If the pond is not deep enough, your fish may end up being eaten by rodents and other predators. You can design it yourself or buy a prefabricated one.
After deciding size and location, the hole will have to be dug. It will need to be lined or otherwise sealed to keep the water in the pond. The advantages of designing the pond yourself are that shapes, styles, and dimensions are endless, but it is also a lot more work. There are several styles and shapes of ready to install outdoor ponds.
You will need a filter and pump installed in your pond to keep the water clean. An electrical outlet for the pump will need to be safely installed nearby. You may want to consider installing a waterfall for additional beauty; the filter can be set up accordingly so the water runs back into the pond over the cascade. Water can fall in one direct fall or several smaller steps, flowing down projecting rocks. In using several steps for the cascade, you can also design a “path” for the waterfall. A waterwheel would make another interesting decoration for your pond.
